Re-Provision Handheld (Deep Reset a Troubled Handheld)

Modified on Fri, Mar 17, 2023 at 2:51 PM

Applies to: Intermec/Honeywell CN51

When a handheld is behaving too badly (or there are major updates to install) it needs to be wiped and re-enrolled/re-provisioned.

You need the following to get started:

  • A WiFi sheet for your WiFi network
  • Re-Provisioning Sheet for your district (the same sheet is used for both provisioning/re-provisioning)

You should be able to find these sheets in your district's folder at the IT Resources SharePoint Site

If there is no WiFi sheet you'll need to supply your WiFi info to the IT Team to have one created

You log in to the SharePoint site with your Choice Books username and password (the same password as you use for BookLink)

Once you have both sheets, start the process as described below.

Please read through the whole process before you start.

Check with the IT Department before starting this process.

Process Overview

  • Exit the Choice Books environment on the HH
  • Scan the small Erase Handheld barcode on the Provisioning Sheet (HH Reboots)
  • Scan your WiFi Sheet and wait for HH to connect to WiFi
  • Scan the two final codes on the provisioning sheet (keep HH on power and WiFi).

  • Troubleshooting steps

Process Details

Step One: Exit the Choice Books environment on the HH

  • On the White Screen with the CB logo, poke the Tools Button and the Exit Option.
  • Enter the passcode given to you by the IT Dept. or your District Manager and poke Accept.
  • This takes you out to a dark blue screen with the date.

Step Two

  • Make sure your HH has WiFi connection
  • Scan the small Erase Handheld barcode on the Provisioning Sheet
  • You will get a warning message that the HH is going to be reset. Poke the OK button
  • The HH will reboot itself, showing the Honeywell logo, then coming back to the dark blue screen with the date

Step Three

Scan your WiFi Sheet and wait for HH to connect to WiFi

NOTE: you will have to scan using the blue button on the front of the HH, right below the screen. The side button won’t scan until the HH has been re-programmed later in this process.

Step Four

  • Scan the codes on the provisioning sheet under the section that says “Install Software”; Scan the small code first then the HH will display a picture of a barcode on the screen at which point you scan the second larger code.
  • Handheld needs to stay on WiFi and power until the HH installs all software and restarts to the Choice Books screen
  • If the screen turns off or the HH loses WiFi between scanning these codes and the HH restarting itself to the Choice Books screen, you need to start over with Step Four
  • If you use the desktop cradle/dock, make sure only power and NOT the computer cable is connected to the dock since that will confuse the HH during the process.
  • This is the stage of the process where the HH is (in the background) downloading all the BookLink software and settings fresh from the server.
  • There will be a download you see on the screen, then the HH will be on the dark blue screen with the date. It will seem like it's not doing anything for awhile.
    • Set a timer for twelve (12) minutes and reboot the HH after the 12 minutes are done.
    • After the reboot set a timer for five (5) minutes. If the HH is not back to the normal Choice Books logo screen by the end of the five minutes, reboot the HH.
    • Within a couple minutes of this reboot it should bring itself back to the white screen with the Choice Books logo
  • When the Choice Books screen is reloaded the HH is ready to use.

BookLink will ask you to confirm your time zone and date/time the first time you start it after this process.

Troubleshooting

Possible issue #1

After the final step and you are in the waiting period, you may get an error that says

“A problem has occurred with AWProcessCommands.exe. Please tell Microsoft about this problem.”

If you get this message press the “Don’t Send” button at the bottom of the screen and leave the HH on power and WiFi. It will continue to process in the background.

Possible Issue #2

After everything is done and you start BookLink you may get a message about an update needing to be installed and needing to Warmboot.

Hit “No” to keep using BookLink.

You can walk through the barcodes on this page (Fixing Errors after HH Reset) to clear these errors.

Contact support@choicebooks.com with the HH unit number if this continues after scanning the codes on this page and we can work with it. Starting all the way from Step one of this process

should also fix it, but we may be able to fix more quickly than that if you let us know.
