How to Save a File to Your Local Computer From a SharePoint Link

Modified on Wed, Oct 30, 2024 at 3:41 PM

  1. When you receive a link to a SharePoint document, click the link to open it in a browser.

  2. Sign in if asked.

  3. Do not make any changes to the document unless authorized. This includes filtering or sorting. If you want to do anything other than viewing the document as is, download a copy for your personal use.

  4. Click File > Create a Copy > Download a Copy. (Note: Do NOT click "Create a copy online". This just makes another file in the same SharePoint folder and creates clutter.)

  5. You will find the file in your downloads folder. Choose a good location to store the document on your local device, if you intend to use it or find it again.

  6. Depending on the type of document, you may have to enable editing on the file before you can make changes.
